Nouveau Lariboisière, Paris

Truly a hospital “in action”, Lariboisière embodies the interaction between hospital and city. A precursor of new ambulatory medicine, lean management and digital processes are changing its approaches and the design of the new hospital reflects this. Embodying the new model for hospitals, the new Lariboisière is designed around its ground-level Medical and Service Platform. Forming an articulation between the existing building and the extension, an Ambulatory Forum on three levels forms a welcoming reference point and connects old and new under a huge glass roof. Clear and accessible, Lariboisière breaks away from its former status as an urban enclave: public space now enters the heart of the hospital. The artwork created specially by Carlos Cruz-Diez places the building on a colourful base, tracing out the perimeter of the initial massing, asserting the hospital’s urban identity and enhancing its sense of spatial unity by highlighting its various architectural sequences. A Paris monument returns to its former glory thanks to a contemporary, open design.
