Tramway maintenance hall, Roubaix-Tourcoing

SMR du nouveau tramway du pôle métropolitain de Roubaix-Tourcoing
SMR du nouveau tramway du pôle métropolitain de Roubaix-Tourcoing

Having won the tender launched by the Lille European Metropolis (MEL) as part of the consortium led by Setec, Groupe-6 architectes is designing the new maintenance and stabling depot (SMR) for the future Roubaix–Tourcoing tram line. The SMR will be built on a former SNCF site subject to restrictions (pollution, fire hazards, earthworks), in the immediate vicinity of Tourcoing station, within the municipalities of Tourcoing and Wattrelos. This new facility is designed to eventually accommodate the storage of a fleet of 36 trams and the maintenance of a fleet of 45 trams, optimising industrial processes whilst enhancing the comfort of future staff. The facility could also house the future control centre for light rail services, with the complex comprising nearly 12 500 m² of built area.

Set within an urban and heritage context, its architecture combines the large, light-filled sheds of the maintenance hall with a brick façade facing the street. The landscaping of the 4.5-hectare site, also designed by Groupe-6 architectes, forms a large meadow criss-crossed by tracks, adjoining the roads and greened car parks. Finally, the project shares the objective of achieving HQE Infrastructures environmental certification, in line with the wider tramway project, and has ambitious eco-design goals, notably through the installation of photovoltaic panels and green roofs. Ultimately, this site will serve as a showcase for a modern approach to public transport management. To this end, its design incorporates a visitor circuit to highlight the site’s operations to passengers, city dwellers and industrial tourists.
