The new Internal-Use Pharmacy (PUI) is the first stage in the redevelopment of the southern sector of Lille University Hospital, and is situated next to the Calmette building. Its architecture is characterised by the juxtaposition of simple, clear forms, each defined by its function. The volumes, oriented perpendicular to the street, form a formal continuation of those of the Calmette Hospital. Empty and full spaces alternate to create depth, recesses and visual openings, breaking up the monotony and uniformity of a building designed for logistics and production. The warehouse and logistics chain are organised on a single level at ground floor, around the logistics courtyard, following a forward-flowing layout. The articulation of the volumes makes the new PUI open to greenery and the landscape. It allows light to penetrate to the heart of the project. The main façades, clad in layered metal panels, complement one another and play with scales of perception and the size of the volumes, whilst ensuring uniformity and consistency in their design. The rhythm of the patterns, perforations, solid panels and transparent sections offers a rich vocabulary of expression, whilst making economical use of materials and budget. Only the reception area and its extension along the front of the dispatch area are clad in precast concrete panels, designed to withstand the heavy wear and tear associated with logistics operations. On the ground floor, the windows are grouped together and contribute to the building’s varying scales. The windows of the pharmaceutical technology building are concealed behind a perforated metal mesh that masks the random nature of the openings. By contrast, the office building embraces the repetitive nature of its openings, thereby ensuring greater flexibility for future development.
