CAP3000 is an emblematic shopping centre ideally located
at the end of the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, facing
the sea and offering uninterrupted views as far as Cap
d’Antibes. The refurbishment-extension work carried out
by Groupe-6 architectes for Altarea has opened up this
exceptional landscaped site, linking it to the city by creating
an urban promenade from the port, and car parks (silos
and underground) to free up the surrounding area. A new
envelope gives it a bold image: a “package” of horizontal,
metallic, fluid and dynamic white ribbons, varied according
to exposure and functionality, reveals the entrances and
commercial programmes, and protects the façades from
rain and sun. Visible from afar, its large 3,800-space car
park stands out, 120 metres wide and five storeys high. A
sloping roof spilling out like a great sail defines a crown
parallel to the river, setting it into the landscape. The
façades, which are sometimes open, sometimes obscured
by vertical slats extended by sunbreakers or expanded
metal sheets, and sometimes fitted with horizontal slats of
screen-printed glass, vary according to their orientation,
thus breaking down what might otherwise be a uniform
building. A comfortable beam height of 2.50 metres adds
to the feeling of clarity, and leaves the view and space wide
open. A series of naturally shaded patios punctuates the
interior layout.
