Bus depot for RTM, Marseille

The storage facility unfolds across three levels, with articulated
buses (ABA) located on the ground floor and standard
buses (ABS) accommodated on the two superstructure
levels above. Parking bays for fifty ABA and one hundred
fifty ABS are predominantly arranged at an angle (herringbone
layout) to facilitate all maneuvering operations. Driver
dispatch areas are located on the ground floor, at the base
of the vertical circulation cores that serve the storage levels.
Third floor houses the parking area for two hundred staff
vehicles, fifty motorcycles, and fifty Mobimétropole scooters.
This open-air parking area will be sheltered from rain
and sun by a series of steel and timber canopies, supporting
approximately 2,500 m² of photovoltaic panels. This level
has an independent access to avoid mixing the flow of light
vehicles with that of the buses within the storage facility.
No underground levels are planned for parking or technical
rooms. The concrete structure features maximum spans
of 16 meters and a clear height of 4,5 meters. It is extensively
ventilated and designed in accordance with PSLV
(Public Sector Large Volume) regulations. The parking
façade is at least 50% open and benefits from a dedicated
smoke extraction simulation study. The volumetry of this
rather large-scale building is softened by the rounded
forms derived from the turning radii of the vehicles. The
helical ramp creates a dynamic architectural element that
symbolizes the activity of the site. The terracotta façade,
robust and durable, echoes the Mediterranean architectural
tradition of Marseille.
