The new University Institute of Biology Pathology of Nice University Hospital (CHU de Nice) is located on the Pasteur Hospital campus, in a remarkable natural and heritage setting, close to the baroque Abbey of Saint-Pons and with views over the Mediterranean Sea. On a narrow plot, its sculpted, stratified massing, rising over seven storeys, creates an elegant silhouette, punctuated at the upper levels by a cantilever that asserts the hospital’s presence within the city. The interior spaces prioritize comfort, collaboration and flexibility through floor plates free of fixed constraints, a 6.60 m structural grid that supports ergonomic layouts and ample natural light, and dedicated break-out areas on every level, including shaded loggias on level 4. The layered façade expresses the building’s functions from ground to sky: a matte, mineral base in concrete structure with lime render, pierced by windows on a 1.10 m rhythm suited to both offices and laboratories, topped by a lighter volume with subtle golden reflections in timber structure—an unprecedented choice in France for a laboratory building—housing the most sensitive functions requiring high air-change rates.
