The Security Site in Montpellier is an ambitious public facility project of strategic importance, bringing together public bodies concerned with citizens’ safety and quiet. Its architectural image makes the building emblematic, firmly embedded in its territory, as it directly outlines the boundary of the site, by means of a massive enclosure. The 2-storey blind plinth increases the building’s protection against vandalism, climbing, intrusion and explosive devices. On this plinth, 3 (buildings) blocks are dedicated to the staff. The central (building) block stands out as an overlooking window on the city. The stoned plinth, as a sort of security-boosting enclosure, fastens the building to its site. Two vertical rifts are set on top of the plinth, granting a sense of unity to the whole building, unburdening its structure, complying with the program’s guidelines, allowing real breathing spaces as well as a glimpse to the sky. The rifts also accommodate the large floor-1 living facilities’ terraces, as well as glass walkways on the upper floors. These connections between the 3 blocks allow a distant view: to the North, over the hanging garden and the tree-filled park, and to the South, over the city. The vegetation sets in these two gaps of the building to create an oasis of fresh air.
