Construction of a new secondary school and gymnasium in Ornex

The construction of a secondary school and gymnasium in Ornex is an important step up for the town’s development. Next to the nursery and primary schools, it is an opportunity to bring about a true republican community, an educational campus, as a magnetic landmark for its residents. Our project combines existing and brand-new facilities by a garden square. The school, the secondary school and the gymnasium are built around this new core, a place for social and intergenerational interaction, apt to multiple uses. The landscape is also at stake. The views over the massifs are preserved. The secondary school’s low roofs are close to the school and guarantee the transparency through the courtyards. The architecture features plain volumes, matching with the region’s traditional rural buildings. The compact gymnasium stands a bit lower into the ground, in order to suit the scale of the neighbourhood’s building. Most of the structure is made of wood. The use of local resources allows the architecture to fit into its environment, thanks to the used materials, such as rammed earth and wood, whose natural colours match with the forest’s background. The strong identity of the educational centre is ensured by the overall unity feeling, while the brand-new sustainable buildings display the educational aim that lays underneath their design.
