Located on the existing site of the Henri Duffaut Hospital in Avignon, the project consists in the construction of a new accommodation and dialysis building and the restructuring and extension of its emergency department. It also marks the first milestone in the gradual transformation of the hospital and its access points, while preserving its remarkable landscape features. The project thus strongly structures the urban space through the construction of a shaded pedestrian mall, the landscaping of the existing park and the enhancement of access to the emergency department with the creation of a tree-lined, peaceful and fragrant forecourt. More resilient to climate change, the new hospital thus improves its welcoming qualities and working conditions for staff.
With a complex and decisive phasing plan combining new construction and renovation on an occupied site, the transformation, which will continue until 2031, is guided by efficiency, clarity and functionality. The new buildings are compact, with direct flow lines. The architecture is understated. It blends in with and enhances the existing buildings in front of which it is located. The overall composition reinforces the clarity of the hospital site as a whole. The image of the Emergency Department is changing: its new façade is striking and interacts with the Mediterranean garden forecourt. The entrance, directly on the ground floor, is clear and pleasant. The interior ambience reflects a focus on people. The park has been preserved. Magnified, it has found a new harmonious relationship with the building and finally contributes its full power to the welcoming image of the hospital.
