Reinforcing France’s position as a major player in the control of Space, and Toulouse’s position as the European capital of aeronautics and space, the new headquarters of the Toulouse Space Command forms a tertiary complex of almost 13,000 m², comprising the Space Command (CDE) and the NATO Space Centre Of Excellence (COE), located on the site of the Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES). They are linked by the Place d’Armes, a space for representation and ceremonies. With their distinct, recognisable identities, the statutory architecture of the CDE and the COE uses sober, high-quality materials (concrete, glass) that are highly institutional, combined with a chromatic approach to their metal skins: grey-blue for the CDE, solid blue for the COE. Inside, the buildings feature spacious, large-scale halls that act as showcases for the two facilities, providing a showcase and a place to socialise before and after the controls. Their architecture reconciles safety, security and confidentiality with openness to the public space and working comfort for staff.
